Warning:  This rambling is truly worthy of a confused Monday.

I’m pondering ‘What’s up with this leg of my ‘Journey’ with the Lord?!’

I’m studying Genesis in my Community Bible Study. We’re at the point where God is making His covenant with Abram and promising that Sarai will have a son. It has been 10+ years since God promised Abram descendants that would rival the number of stars in the sky and no child has been born. Sarai and Abram have gotten a little ‘antsy’ and decided to ‘help God out’ a little bit. Sarai has ‘encouraged’ Abram to have ‘relations’ with Hagar (maidservant of Sarai); Hagar has become pregnant with Ishmael; the household is under siege with unrest and discord; Sarai has ran Hagar off because she just couldn’t deal with the implications/outcomes/results.  No one is happy.  Could it be that they usurped the Lord’s plans?

Abram is nearly 100 and Sarai is nearly 90. God shows up after more than 10 years after promising a child (25+ years after promising a nation) … he has a face to face with Abram and reconfirms His covenant and promises that Sarai will bear a child. There is much more to the story, but I have to say that I really got caught up on the gap in time between God’s promise and His fulfillment.

I realize that God’s timing is much different that mine. I also appreciate that His ways are much higher than any ways on this earth. But I gotta say that I’m in a time of life right here – right now where I really wish that God would reappear and renew a commitment… a promise… with me.. and talk to me about ‘fulfillment’.

Sometimes I consider this amazing journey that I am on with and through Christ… I marvel at his goodness and faithfulness to me and my family… I can look back over my spiritual life and see where choices have been made… decisions cast… turns committed to and see His hands all over me and mine… his perfect timing.  Then I consider the past 5 years and I just wonder if my ‘journey’ has been sidetracked or delayed.

Today, I wonder, why this leg of the journey is so long. I wonder if I got on the ‘wrong train’, or if like that recent airplane fiasco that went 3 hours without communication and overshot the targeted airport… is my pilot asleep at the wheel or is He busy ‘reading up’ on the latest ‘Angel Training Policy’.

I say all of this ‘in just’… and I really do have an amazing faith and trust in the Creator of this Universe.  I do not doubt His goodness and His plan for my life, but I have to admit that these thoughts do go through my mind… and satan just loves to grab onto my momentary doubt and make it into a ‘big deal’.

Do YOU ever wonder ‘what’s up?’ Do you ever wonder if like in the reality series Amazing Race, that you’ve hit a ROAD BLOCK… and there is something that you have to find or uncover before you continue on the journey?

If you are like me… you accept that there are seasons in life… and – just maybe – you get a little antsy, just like Abram and Sarai… and consider taking things into your own hands… and find out that you’ve ’screwed things all up’.

These time gaps are times of preparation.  We like Abram must go through training… we go through many difficulties and hardships because God wants to train us to put hope in God alone. God wants to completely break us from our attachments to worldly things and human hopes. Human hopes are like the mist of the morning. They are here for a moment, then gone. But those who put their hope in God are not weakened but strengthened (Isaiah 40:31).

Let me offer the only thing I know… His Word and a prayer.  Allow my confession of momentary lapse be fuel to your faith.

God knows ALL & cares for you.  Luke 12:6-7

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.  Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

God never forgets or leaves us & is mighty to save.  Deuteronomy 31:6 & Zephaniah 3:17

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.

God is our refuge.  2 Samuel 22:3

My God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence.

He intends ‘good’ for us.  John 10:10

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

His greatest desire is for us to trust and not waver in our faith.  Romans 3:22 & Revelation 2:10

We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison to test you. You will suffer for ten days. But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life.

Father God, many of us have long-term battles in our lives that seem hopeless to us. We have spent hours on our knees in prayer, yet the enemy’s onslaught of  ‘doubt arrows’ continue. We are tired and weary, our hearts are sore yet we declare, ‘We shall not lose heart.’ We claim the confidence that we have through you.  We take your armor and we will fight, if need be, until our dying breath, confident that the One who reigns supreme and sits upon the Throne will eventually conquer. We will press knowing that you are walking with us, loving us, and preparing us for greater things.  We love you Lord. Draw us nearer to you. Strengthen our faith.  In your precious name we pray, Amen.

The Mobius Bracelet continues to be one of the more popular gift items that we carry.  The bracelet is unique in that it sits comfortably about the hand, while the form itself displays unusual geometric properties. The shape is known as a Möbius strip, after the German mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius [1790-1868]. It represents the seeming paradox of a plane without end, or one of infinite length. As such it became accepted as a symbol for infinity, an appropriate and symbolic form for these memorable inscriptions.

Bracelets are available in both sterling silver and 14 karat gold.  Whether it be one Mobius or a series of five - moms, daughters, grandmothers, and friends alike absolutely adore these bracelets and necklaces.

New !! – in time for this Holiday Season – are the AMAZING GRACE, HEARTS FOREVER & PATER NOSTER (Lord’s Prayer in Latin) mobius bracelets.   Also new are the DOXOLOGY Mobius Necklace and ‘MAY THE ROAD RISE TO MEET YOU’ Mobius Necklace.

In the Northeast, I am confronted, almost daily, with those who believe that just ‘being a good, moral person and not breaking any laws” is good enough.  Good enough ‘for what?’ you may ask.  I guess I’m not sure.  People are very tied up in status and impressions around here… especially in Fairfield County.  I really think that people believe that if they ‘keep their noses clean’  and ‘do good’ for the sake of doing good… that their moral life on this earth will be blessed (by something or someone) and that they will thrive.

I realize that I’m not talking about people who do evil here… or am I?

I heard a challenging sermon recently on the John 3:19-21 passage.

19  This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.   20  Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.   21  But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.

At first glance, this passage is only talking about those who are filled with evil on this earth… murders, pedophiles, etc.  But, what I heard was that there are two types of people who this scripture refers to.  The word EVIL used in versus 19 and 20 come from two different Greek words.

  1. Poneayra – violates God’s word through wicked acts.  Acts, thoughts & lifestyles that harm others.
  2. Faula – rotten, spoiled, bad, useless, worthless acts.  Acts that are probably selfish and not serving others much less the Creator of the Universe.

I understand that the Greek term (Poneayra) was used for evil in verse 19 and that the Greek term (Faula) was used for evil in verse 20.  Listen to how that may change the meaning of this specific scripture for you.

19  This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were PONEAYRA (wicked).   20  Everyone who does  FAULA (worthless acts) hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.   21  But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.

This makes much sense to me.

Think about all of those people you know who are busy doing good, but who do not need a savior… and in fact avoid all possible occasions of any meaningfull conversation about Jesus or walking by faith.  Or what about those who claim to be Christ followers but spend all of their waking energy on their own agendas… growing the 401K, house renovations, etc., but spend no time growing their own faith, encouraging others in faith, or ensuring that their family members are growing in Christ.

I believe that Jesus said that there are 2 types of people in this specific scripture passage that separate themselves from Him:

  • Those who do bad things (v.19)
  • Those who do nothing good for Him (v.20)

In His eyes, they are both evil.

Even if you don’t physically abuse your child, but do not lead them to a Christ-centered life …  you are FAULA.

Even if you are the best friend ever, but do not pray for them… you are FAULA.

Even if you don’t mentally abuse your spouse, but also do not encourage and love them through Christ… you are FAULA.

Even if you go to Church every Sunday, but do not seek Christ fully every day of the week and strive to serve Him and His Kingdom… you are FAULA.

If you are doing nothing for eternity… you are FAULA.

Wow!  These are tough words.  Jesus asks us to give up our worthless endeavors and seek Him first in ALL that we do.

He is saying, ‘Stop trying to impress everyone!  Impact their lives instead… for Me.  The outcome is eternal.’

Lovin’ the Light… cause the Light first loved me!

A couple of years ago, we were very excited to begin carrying this wonderful line of Christmas Ornaments.  Each year since, we have SOLD OUT of most of our inventory.  What makes them special you ask?  In my opinion, it is that they depict the true meaning of Christmas.  The ornaments depict either words of worship , names of Christ, or actual scripture.  I have a friend who hung a set on a ficus tree just so they would be ’set apart’ and noticed for being ‘different’.

The ornaments come in two shapes… round/flat or round/hollow (sorta bubble-like).  They are made of ceramic and hand painted in vibrant colors that reflect the joy of the season.  Each ornament is finished off with a ribbon for hanging.  Here is one to give you an idea … click here to see the rest of these fine hand-painted Christmas Ornaments.

This morning the family woke up to rain with a promise of high winds and power outages by 10am.  Interesting how the weather man could instill such dread in one’s heart.  Knowing that I had better get moving and get the electricity-dependant chores done early, I set off right to work.  I drove the kids down our moderately long drive so that they could wait in a dry place for the school bus.  As soon as they were off I dashed back into the house (still in my candy cane striped pjs & flip flops) and headed right to the laundry room.

Yep, this is where Lazarus, the washing machine, still lives.  For those of you following his debacle… he’s still alive.  Since his resurrection, he had a bad spell with lots of moaning and squeaking a few weeks back, but by the grace of God he has hung in there.  I really wanted to get my two load of laundry through their cycles before the ‘promised’ power outages hit.  Unfortunately, I had not finished up my laundry completely from yesterday and there was a load to be folded in the dryer.  I had turned it on to fluff before I drove the kids to the bus.  It was now done.  So there I am - minding my own business - folding boxer’s and towels and thinking aloud ‘when am I going to kick this nasty cold’ … and I heard a thump.  In fact, I heard a couple of thumps and started to think… ‘well we did have opossums in our attic when we lived in Pleasant Hill, CA… perhaps a rodent has moved into my comfy little home in CT.’  I stopped folding  as my apprehension grew… I decided to thump hard on the dryer and Lazarus (the washer) to see what would happen.  I did so… and out of the corner of my eye I saw a black fuzzy body scamper quicker than lightning from behind the machines and out of the laundry room.  As my mind caught up with what I had just seen – fully realizing that this was no rodent and meant no harm to anyone – I pulled off my flip flop and threw it at Blackie, our 8-year-old cat.

He ran faster as I mumbled ‘how dare you scare me so early in the morning – especially when I’ve had no caffiene’ and ‘what in the world were you doing behind the dryer… how did you fit?’  Blackie is no small animal.  My husband says that he has an eating disorder, and I would have to agree.  He’s fat.  He has never in our 5+ years of living in CT been behind the dryer.  To say that his appearance was unexpected would be an understatement.

Do you know how it is when something scares you – throws you off balance – and you walk on in fear of the next ’surprise’.  That’s sorta how I wandered around for the next hour.  Blackies appearance put me on guard and rather than being about tasks at hand, Iwas leery and skeptical and waiting for the ‘next thing’.  The silliness of it all would be highly hysterical if my actions weren’t so absurd.

Isn’t that how we sometimes live out our days?  Something bad happens (something much worse than a cat leaping out from behind a dryer) and we find ourselves in a funk and have the attitude and mind set that ‘more is on the way’.  We live with a defeatist attitude and succumb to the lie of the enemy that promises trouble around every corner.  We forget that we belong to the Creator of the Universe and that we are His children & He has made amazing promises to us about how to live in victory.  We need to let go of fear and anxiety and cling tight to Jesus… we do not walk this earth alone!

If you are in ‘one of those moods’ today.  Take heart.  Claim His promises!  Here are a few to get you started….

The Lord is my light and my salvation— so why should I be afraid?  The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?  Psalm 27:1

The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear.  What can mere people do to me?  Psalm 118:6

I praise God for what he has promised.  I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?  What can mere mortals do to me?  Psalm 56:4

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.  2 Timothy 1:7

For I hold you by your right hand—I, the Lord your God.  And I say to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.’  Isaiah 41:13

Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.  Luke 10:19

For God has said, “I will never fail you.  I will never abandon you.”  So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear.  What can mere people do to me?”  Hebrews 13:5-6

Kurt Stratton posted this in his Daily Muse today.  It touched me deeply so I thought that I’d pass it on to the rest of you…

“I am the springtime, when everything seems so fine.

Whether rain or sunshine, you will find me playing.

Days full of pretending.

When a dime is a lot to be spending.

A time when life is beginning.

I am the springtime.

I am the summer. When the days are warm and longer.

When the call comes to wander, but I can’t go far from home.

When the girls become a mystery.

When you’re barely passing history.

And thinking old is when you’re thirty.

I am the summer.

And I am the autumn days. When changes come so many ways.

Looking back I stand amazed that time has gone so quickly.

When love is more than feelings.

It’s fixing bikes and painting ceilings.

It’s when you feel a cold wind coming.

I am the autumn days.

I am the winter. When days are cold and bitter.

And the days I can remember number more than the days to come.

When you ride, instead of walking.

When you barely hear the talking.

And goodbyes are said too often.

I am the winter…

But I’ll see springtime in heaven,

and it will last forever.”

From Seasons of a Man, Steve and Annie Chapman.

“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die…” (Eccl. 3:1,2).

Whatever season you find yourself in today, may you not waste your time sobbing over the past, or fretting about the future…but embracing “the day the Lord has made.”

I had to clean up the house a bit this morning…  it’s not my MOST favorite thing to do… but I enjoy how the house feels once the job is done.  However, I do have a certain aversion when it comes to toilets and showers.  I’d much prefer a CSI Crime Scene Cleanup Crew for those particular areas.

cleaning

So this morning I was dusting (sorta) and windexing (everything with a hard surface) :-) and I thought to myself, ‘Man, I’m really not doing a very thorough job.  When am I going to be able to really spend some time doing a deeper cleaning?’

It made me think back to when I was growing up in rural Indiana.  I recalled how – from a very early age – I was expected to clean up the house (just the basics… vacuum, dust, and bathroom scrubbing) on a weekly basis.  (And no, I did not get an allowance for doing it).  I also remembered how my mother would go CRAZY once a year in the springtime… and everyone had to be involved… the task at hand – spring cleaning.  This was the time of the year where no place in the house went untouched.  Closets were cleared out, cleaned and organized, rooms were emptied of furniture, walls were washed, floors were polished, carpets were shampooed, and sometimes fresh paint was applied.  This would go on for weeks at a time until the job was complete.  The result was a completely clean house… fresh, sparkly, orderly.  Nothing hidden from view was dirty or unorganized.  Truly the house was renewed and refreshed.

As I pondered the difference between a quick cleaning and a spring cleaning, I thought, ‘you know… this is sorta like my walk with Christ.’  I likened my devotion time every day to a quick cleaning.  I spend enough time with Him to work through and ‘clean up’ the basic, easy to get to issues and sins, but I am less likely to spend time delving into those dark corners in my heart and those closed closets with junk inside.

I suppose spring cleaning could be likened to a retreat.  I’ve been on some AMAZING retreats in my life time.  These were occasions when I had more time and I was willing to expend the effort opening up the closets and the ’stuffed drawers’ and investing the time ‘going through stuff’ with my Savior.  Sometimes it was very hard work, and often painful, but when I walked away and headed back into my day-to-day life, I felt so much better.

Psalm 51:10 says, ‘Create in me a clean heart, O God.  Renew a loyal spirit within me.’

God helps us ‘put things into the right places’.  He is able to completely wash away sins and purify dirty hearts.  He renews and refreshes us – again and again.  The outcome of the ‘cleaning’ is directly proportionate to the amount of ‘effort’ that we put into it.

2 Corinthians 4:16 ”That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.’

Hebrews 10:22 says, ‘Let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.’

Do you need to undertake a season of Spring Cleaning in your heart?  WARNING… the process will more than likely be less pleasant that cleaning a toilet, but the outcome will be eternally more rewarding :-)

Blessings to each of you.

Room Blessing Plaques

Room Blessing Plaques

The Room Blessings Plaques continue to be a VERY popular item in our store.  To hang on a wall, doorpost, above a bed, by a light switch… anywhere a special reminder or blessing is appropriate.   This has been adapted from the wonderful tradition of Mezuzahs, in which a blessing (the Mesusah) is placed on each doorpost and gate in a home. The traditional Jewish Mezuzah cover requires a small parchment inscribed with specific prayers.  This design can be used as a Mezuzah cover, or to simply serve as a reminder of our many blessings.  See our most recent discussion of the Room Blessings Plaques… A Blessing for Baby.

Abide... Faith, Hope & Love
